My Thoughts on Events in 2020

Unless you've been living under a rock, I'm sure you're aware of what's been going on in the world. From the COVID-19 Global Pandemic to Protests Against Police Brutality, it appears that everyone's life has been touched in some way, shape, or form. I'm not going to take sides on these issues, but I'd like to share my overall thoughts and honestly… I didn’t think this would matter to me.

It may be selfish to be uninterested in what is going on in the world, but I've always felt as if there was a barrier between me and current events. As a 23-year-old Technician and Web Designer, I assumed that the majority of what I saw on the news would never reach my local community, family, or friends. It was similar to watching a reality TV show, but it was for'real' people somewhere else, and anyone could just wander around it. In fact, we do it in traffic as well.

So, when I first heard about the foreign pathogen wreaking havoc on China's economy, I assumed they'd handle it quickly and that it'd be forgotten in a few months. When I saw on the news that a black man had been murdered by a cop, I thought to myself, "Well, we're all angry and shouting just like last time, but nobody cares enough to fight back, right?"

2020 has shown me that even something as insignificant as the Coronavirus, or an incident a hundred miles away like the murder of George Floyd, a man I'd never met or knew existed, can have an impact on my social circle. I can see what everyone is talking about when they say "new normal."

My question is, how long can this go on? How long will it be before society returns to normalcy? Is it even possible to return to the old normal, and if not, are we on the right track toward a better normal? Whatever the answer is, I hope those who are reading this are doing well. I hope you are safe and healthy, and that you understand that your life is important not only to you, but to everyone who knows you, loves you, and thinks about you.
